you probably don t know this disco banger, i think there is about 4 or 5 known copies on 7inch, everyone who has a copy has been keeping it quiet. i first heard it from david haffner about 4 years ago and had been after it since then. after a lot of research i came to the conclusion the everyone involved had passed away, but months after giving up after i spotted benitas full name on another related lp credited as a backing singer. i was then able to track down benita who was alive, well and surprised and very happy to hear from me. this one is a beast and will fly out (i find myself saying this far to often).

after putting out kito jempere s stunning sea monster album earlier in the year, hell yeah now serve up a bunch of remixes from it that have been secret weapons for the last few months. behind them are black spuma, lipelis and bell towers and they all serve up real heaters. first up with possibly their best ever remix are black spuma�a collaboration between phillip lauer (tuff city kids, arto mwambe) and fabrizio mammarella (telespazio)�who flip ampa into a bootylicious house cut with fat bass stabs and sci-fi synths. it s retro in flavour and riddled with melodies that are brightly coloured and emotive, and when the vocal is layered in it helps carry you away on a wave of bliss. for djs who prefer to keep things raw, a dub version without the vocals is also included and bangs that bit harder.

hauntological dub taking the mystical eastern melodica scales pioneered by augustus pablo and applying them to a unique mix of reversioned cult themes and roots rockers. doctor pablo was a key member of creation rebel as well as contributing to such canonical albums as cry tuff dub encounter volume 1 and some of the early hitrun records sides, a pre-cursor to on-u sound. it is also the third album appearance by the dub syndicate. features the much-loved dub re-rub of the theme tune to classic british science fiction show doctor who.

along with his rival, cornell campbell, johnny clarke was one of the most esteemed singers of the roots reggae era. having grown up next door to a popular sound system on waltham park road in western kingston, clarke s early fascination with music led him to hang out at studio one with jacob miller while still at school. he then made the rounds of talent shows with barry brown, sugar minott and the diamonds, which led to a debut recording in 1973, for the pianist glen stair, which remains unreleased. an early effort for clancy eccles, �god made the sea and sun,� was not promoted properly, though �everyday wondering,� for rupie edwards, impacted in britain, �golden snake� for stamma houghton and a cover of smokey robinson�s �you really got a hold on me� for glen brown were also false starts. the breakthrough finally came in 1975 when clarke linked with bunny lee, who had him voice the rastafari landmark �none shall escape the judgement� (written by earl zero, who failed to muster a credible take), which kick-started the �flying cymbal� craze. clarke�s resultant debut album, enter into his gates with praise, mixed hard-hitting rastafari devotional material with sympathetic cover versions of classics by the likes of the paragons, slim smith and delroy wilson, along with a few reggae renditions of some vintage american r&b.

last year�s on the corner underground smash release, the 12� ep santuri�s embaire umeme, introduced uganda�s mugwisa international xylophone group (m.i.x.g) to the world. the recordings center on the embaire, a giant xylophone native to ugandan folk music, which is dug into a pit for a natural, earthy bass resonance as gargantuous as the instrument itself. the instrument performs a key role in village life, with ceremonial playing sessions lasting for hours on end. these recordings may be esoteric in nature but they add important context to the santuri�s embaire umeme 12� and are a vital documentation of the iganga village�s culture, as well as that of uganda. jones has artfully chopped the epic session into a series of short evocative chapters to create a pioneering masterpiece. remix duties are led by griot house innovators, the diabolcal liberties, who have raved-up some sun ra frequencies for the cosmic junglist crew. last but never least, victoria topping has created beautiful artwork using the session photography taken by jones during the recordings

it�s already been 5 years since the last zombie zombie album rituels d�un nouveau monde, after which the group explored other territories by signing 2 film scores, namely loubia hamra by narimane mari and irréprochable by sébastien marnier, as well as creating the music accompanying a contemporary circus show called slow futur created by martin palisse and elsa guérin. wouldn�t these beautiful parentheses make you want to return to the sources? after 10 years at versatile records, 2017 also marks the decade anniversary of the release of their first album a land for renegades in 2007, at the time considered to be one of the 10 best albums of the year according to rough trade. livity - zombie zombie�s latest opus seems to plunge us deep into science fiction, with a cover designed by the mythic cartoonist philippe druillet, who is also the founder of the cult métal hurlant comic series. the title of the album is somewhat misleading, as one could mistakenly think of a certain dub record made at the famous island records compass point studio in the bahamas.

next up on our album manoeuvres we head back up to sheffield. hiem are back with their 3rd album, the galactic cornucopia that is hotspace. it is a fine follow up to the 2013 escape from division street released here on nang. hiem consist of dynamic duo of nick eastwood & bozzwell (he was the live vocalist for -the all seeing i- who scored a worldwide hit with the beat goes on in 1998). we have always thought of hiem as one part grown-up dance pop, one part fine 80 s tinged songs and one part slightly weird and quirky. the third album doesn t disappoint managing to cram all those descriptions (and more) across ten fine songs.

no matter where the winds may blow, what storms may come or what pirates will do, the transatlantyk ship is still sailing. navigated for the last three years by zambon out of berlin, ultimately avoiding the shallow waters of the generic and constantly patrolling the seas in search of exciting sounds. after all that sailing the label just had to replenish its ranks with some fresh faces - those still capable of voyaging into the unknown. joining the crew is a young gun tamten, who by day serves as a vinyl pusher in warsaw s finest side one record store. what he does by night is not the matter of this short text, but we are sure he does a lot of it. hence his love for all things distant - from subaquatic pads and floating riffs, to new-age-y siren voices, otherworldly effects and percussion drenched in reverb. there is a lot of similarly distant, sun-bleached material on this five tracker, full of a druggy and hippy balearic feel. beautiful ambient jam przebudzenie is the stand out track, but znaki czasu is equally as good with its simple, yet memorable melody, reminding of dawns and sunsets on some god forsaken beach. sultry deepness of nieznajoma is followed by enchanting digital exotica of wyrocznia and wavey trip-hop cut po burzy . overall its one of the strongest eps that transatlantyk managed to co-opt into its growing catalogue. definitely one for the dreamers.

backyard boogie present their first release from the new label coming out of amsterdam. the release comes from the friendship of charlie & jody and what they created together coming from two different musical backgrounds, now with their music crossing paths. they used a variety of analog machines and field recordings to help create the music. the release also sees a collaboration with a local amsterdam artist ardjoen mahangoe, who helped create the artwork for the release.

dr. love is a veteran and key tastemaker / vinyl junkie on the montreal scene and laura ingalls is a wandering french person of no specific sex who has recently landed in the french canadian city and they both bonded over their love of anything disco and poutine, the main local dish which consists of potato, cheese, gravy and maybe sometimes added meat! dr love likes to dig but doesn t really produce while laura ingalls is not the most efficient digger and only seems to unearth old folk and obscure arabic music for their personal collection but has serious production skills.

rezz s involvement in the toronto scene helped grow her gritty style. events like bassmentality and older shows at the legendary guverment helped shape not only rezz, but an era of electronic music producers who became inspired from early dj college tours. mass manipulation is a commentary on how easily our minds can become manipulated by the things we consume in society. we consume heavily through the media, which, in turn, tries to curate our thoughts and dictate how we as humans are supposed to live and behave. this album plays off this idea and invites people to become hypnotized, allowing their brains to be manipulated by my music in the hope they might see things through a new perspective (perhaps an outer world viewpoint). one where everyone is free from the unrealistic expectations planet earth has drawn for them. a world of acceptance and hypnosis.
